new stages, phases + blogging

I’m sitting here in my bedroom, drinking a cup of tea, listening to the sweet snoring of my Oscar as he’s passed out in my bed with a little fever that I think he picked up at his Saturday morning art class. I thought, while I sit here (I promised him not to leave his side – except for my evening bath) I would take a moment to write. I’ve been struggling with this online space for awhile and tip toeing around it. The blog has changed over the years – starting out (12.5 years ago!) about my business, then it broke off into 2 blogs – one business and one home. Things change, as they do – the blog was way cooler then because we were doing renovations and decorating then I had a baby and talked all about mom stuff. Now I’m entering a new phase in my life where the house is pretty much done (with the exception of some decks, finishing the studio, and maybe a total gut of Oscar’s room in a few years) but nothing that would warrant constant updates on the blog about decor – as much as I love decor.

My life is is no longer consumed with what baby carriers are the best, what toys are sweet or what fabric I should make curtains out of. At every stage in the past 12 years I could clearly categorize this online space. It was first a “business” blog, then it became a “decorating / design / diy” blog, then it embraced the “mom” category. Now I’m at a stage where I don’t really feel like fitting into a singular category anymore because it’s too much effort. It’s way too much effort and stress to keep focus on keeping a blog on a path of singular focus.

My life is now getting Oscar to school, filled with meetings, product sourcing and fulfilling orders. I’m then picking up Oscar, getting him home, fed, and being with him until he falls asleep and I find myself either working on my laptop in our living room or, watching Netflix with Aubrey until I have my evening bath and, go to bed. Needless to say I think I’ve stared at my blog wondering what on earth it is anymore.

And then I realized I don’t have to overthink it. It doesn’t have to be anything! Huzzah!

So here’s what it’s going to be. It’s just going to be my blog where I write as I want and share what I do, and delete crazy comments as I feel fit and approve those I love. I’m not abiding by any blogging rules that some online article writes is the protocol for good blogs or, worrying about how often i post. I’ll work with sponsors I love as I have done in the past and some months just share inspiring quotes or pictures of family outings. It’s a new phase of the blog where I obviously have no real focus! Ha!

I feel the same way Lindsay. I LOVE what you wrote…that it is way too stressful to follow a singular focus on a blog.. I still have projects to do around my house , but will be sharing other things random things and who knows what else. I think it will make blogging so much mute enjoyable for all.

I truly enjoy everything you blog about. Whether it’s posts about your lovely boy, business advice, renovating or just a chit chat. We all have a habit of overthinking life!!! We need to take a moment and breath and just go with it. Keep it up!!! Enjoy the week.

I am in the same boat, except my kids have flown the nest but teaching kindergarten sucks the life out of me. My blog is just there and when I feel like it I will write in it. Feels good to just let go, doesn’t it?

Seems like a happy new phase you’re entering. I think we overthink so many darn things in our lives that our blogs shouldn’t be yet one more stress. I like your approach Do what makes you happy!

Brilliant! It’s sounds cliche, but it is so true–life if too short to give energy to things that truly don’t matter. Good for you.
