Making Almond Milk

I’m attempting to incorporate some healthier choices into my life. When I first started off it felt like everyone was talking a different language – had no idea about things like Flax Seed, Chia Seeds, using coconut oil when cooking. I’m FAR off from knowing a lot – I have just cracked the door open, and peeked in on a world that I find fascinating and something I’d like to learn more about. I thought I’d share some of the things I learn along the way and like with the hope that maybe it will make healthier eating seem less daunting than it feels like for me.

Two things really helped start off the process to healthier eating. The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon, the addition of a Vitamix into my house and a nut milk bag. With those three things, I was able to accomplish making my first foray into some healthier choices – making Almond Milk – which was surprisingly easy, and, a great deal of fun. I haven’t replaced milk from my day, but I drink very little of it – only in my coffees. But Almond Milk – the good kind that you find in a juicing store – or that you make yourself – is ridiculously amazing and, like a treat. It also comes in handy for some desserts (which I will write about another time)

The Oh She Glows Cookbook has gotten a lot of press, as it should. The book is really fantastic because it makes a lot of the recipes approachable, and Angela doesn’t come off as preaching – but instead comes off as sharing – which is really refreshing. Making her Almond Milk requires little ingredients but you will need the Vitamix*, Nut Milk Bag, and some key ingredients like almonds, medjool dates, cinnamon, and vanilla exract. (I used Vanilla Beans the first few times and I think I put too much in and I think I overdosed on vanilla – so I switched to extract*) After I made Almond Milk once by myself, and realized how easy it was – I started involving Oscar – because – well – this part……

You pour the blended almonds into a nut milk bag and squeeze out the “milk”. Oscar, as you can see, loves this part and I think it’s the cutest thing to see his little hands go crazy. Seriously. I’ve watched this video a million times on my phone. It’s fun to involve him, and he also loves eating the left over almond from the bag after.  I have purchased two of these bags – one for myself and then another for my Mom because I loved it so.

Anyhow, just a little something we’re loving over here. And it’s great fun to do with kids.

* My Mom swears by waiting for the showstopper on The Shopping Channel to buy a Vitamix. It’s where she bought hers, and then mine when she gave me mine for my birthday.
** The vanilla Extract brand I chose in the picture is purely for visual choice – as I loved the label. But any pure vanilla I’m sure would work. 🙂
