Adding some detailing to the Dining Room

adding trim to the dining room
“Decorating” has been postponed and we are tackling the Dining Room project of adding architectural interest to the room. All of the trim cost us $74 so budget wise, this was the best one to tackle right now.

Aubrey and my brother started on the trim today at noon, and six hours later they were 90% done. Aubrey has to finish off a few more pieces and then it is my turn to get out a paintbrush and paint the trim out. What else? We may possibly add a new colour above the chair rail (don’t get too excited, likely a muted colour) and I’d love to also tackle new dining room chairs and a new chandelier —- I feel that those would take the room to a whole new level of awesome.

You're going to love the wainscoting 🙂 We added wainscoting to our living room and dining room, and it made such a huge difference to the look & feel of the rooms. It makes the rooms feel like they're wrapping you up in a big hug 🙂

Amazing how that changes the whole feeling of the room. It was one of the first changes we made in our house when we moved in 8 years ago! Lots of pictures here –

Wonderful! I sometimes wish I had done a muted tone above our chair rail, but the red is quite fun! Can't wait to see it all painted – it's looking great.

Can you spray paint your chandelier until you decide on the one of your dreams? A bright, fun color to contrast with the muted walls would add some zip.

I second Mary's idea to paint the chandelier… a few years ago Crate and Barrel had one just like that came in white, black, or bright yellow. It was amazing, but a little too much for this girl.

You have the makings on an awesome chandelier there!

I did this project in the hallway of my house throughout. I really should post it one day! My mind isn't wired to figure out angles so I'm not lieing when I say that I used nearly twice as much wood as necessary. I was proud of myself when I was done! It turned our really nice! I went with a muted color on top too. It likely would have been much more dramatic if I went dark, but I'm a soft color girl too!
